CAMERON, Mo. - More than six hours after two tractor trailers collided on Interstate 35, southbound lanes remained closed as investigators worked to clear wreckage from the fiery crash that killed one person and injured two others.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports the wreck happened around 1:10 a.m. at mile marker 61, about five miles north of Cameron, near the Winston exit.

John tells us he was in the northbound lanes stuck in traffic for more than two hours. According to the Patrol, both directions of the highway were closed for a time, but northbound traffic did reopen a few hours after the crash.

A Patrol spokesman said a northbound truck crossed into the southbound lanes and hit another tractor trailer head-on. The driver of the northbound truck died at the scene.

A second person inside the northbound truck was pulled from the burning truck by a passerby, the Patrol said. That person was taken by a medical helicopter to an area hospital with unspecified injuries.

The driver of the southbound truck was transported to another hospital by ambulance.

Authorities didn’t estimate on when southbound lanes would open again.

NBC Action News will provide more details here and on NBC Action News Today as we learn them.
