When you're at home when severe weather strikes, there's a useful tool you can use to help protect loved ones.
Weather radios are especially handy when a storm has knocked out power in your home.
When a warning is issued in your county, the National Weather Service sends out an alarm. That alarm alerts homeowners to pay attention to the storms and prepare to possibly seek shelter.
"That's probably the only thing that's going to let you know at 3:00 a.m. we've issued a tornado warning for your community," said Andy Bailey with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "So we highly encourage everyone to go out and get a weather radio."
This year NBC Action News is teaming up with
Price Chopper stores
where you can buy a weather radio for $29.95.
