KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Salvation Army and Kansas City Power & Light will partner up to give away 500 free fans to anyone who needs one Friday morning.
The giveaway will happen between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. at the Salvation Army's warehouse, 1110 Truman Rd., Kansas City, Mo.
The organizations will also make deliveries to seniors.
This is the first of several giveaways the two organizations have planned to keep people cool and safe during the summer months.
Amanda Buehler, the Salvation Army Special Projects Coordinator said it is also important to make sure people know how to keep cool.
"Some people, particularly seniors, may not know when a fan is turned on and you leave your windows closed, it can actually create a furnace effect, which is more harmful than helpful,” she said
"The fan distribution is very important,” Buehler added. “It can be the difference between life and death. A lot of people suffer from heat stroke or suffer from other serious illnesses because of the extreme heat."
For seniors requesting fan delivery, the number to call is 877-566-2769.
