KANSAS CITY, Missouri - As it stands right now, the winter we’ve seen is pretty average. Really average, in fact, with the 20.3 inches of snowfall we’ve seen just two-tenths of an inch above our 30-year-average for a full winter season.
But we’re not done quite yet.
Some models have Kansas City seeing as much as 16 inches of snow in a storm that will arrive in full force sometime Tuesday, and if that happens, we’ll crack the Top 10 as far as highest snow totals for an individual winter.
We’ve got a long way to go to knock off the top spot, reached 99 years ago in the 1911-12 season which saw 67 inches of snow.
But hey, anything is possible, especially considering that year we only had about 27 inches heading into March, but an intense month full off significant snow events, including a record 16 inches on March 23,
dumped an unprecedented 40.2 inches of snow on Kansas City, giving us the season total we haven’t come close to since.
More realistically, we could certainly knock 1992 (34.3 inches) out of the No. 10 spot, and maybe even bump 1897 (36.3 inches) down a notch from No. 9.
Here’s a look at the 10 snowiest winters, based on totals recorded by the National Weather Service.
1. 1911-12 (67)
2. 1959-60 (58.5)
3. 1961-62 (54.7)
4. 2009-10 (44.2)
5. 1925-26 (42.4)
6. 1898-99 (38.6)
7. 1914-15 (37.3)
8. 1923-24 (37.1)
9. 1897-98 (36.3)
10. 1992-93 (34.3)
