KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The winter storm is causing thousands of people in the Kansas City area to lose power.
Kansas City Power & Light reported more than 36,000 customers without power Tuesday morning.

The organization urges you to notify them if you lose power. You can report it online at kcpl.com or call 1-888-LIGHT-KC (1-888-544-4852). Response to that number is automated.

You'll want to have a storm kit incase you lose power.
Things to include are a battery-powered lantern or flashlight, with extra batteries. Also have a car charger for your cell phone.

You'll want enough water and nonperishable food to get you through the storm -- that's up to one gallon of water per person, per day. And make sure you have a hand operated can opener.
If you come across a downed line, call your electric provider immediately. Never touch the line or anything touching the line.
