KANSAS CITY, Kan. - At Saturday's Sporting Kansas City home opener, the fans came in droves. But in the midst of it all, the game is fostering the big soccer dreams of future generations.
"If you love the game you should live up to it," said 9-year-old Beck Rettenmaier from Leawood.
Rettenmaier has been finessing his skills ever since he had the ability to talk.
The passion trickles down from his father, Paul, who himself was a soccer player as a kid and now notices the difference between generations.
"When I was a kid, they wore Chiefs jerseys, Royals jerseys. These kids are wearing international soccer jerseys: Messi and Ronaldo, Sporting Kansas City," Paul Rettenmaier said.
As recent champs, Sporting Kansas City is the talk of the town.
"To have everybody in town talking about it at work it's absolutely surprising, I'm shocked," Paul said.
No doubt once the game starts, the atmosphere inside Sporting Park is electrifying.
"They're real, they're legit," Andrea Burke said.
Burke was visiting from Iowa to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and says she understands the passion Sporting KC fans express.
"They know that if they lose, they lose. They know if they win they win and proud either way," Burke said.
The team heads to Mexico City for their game against Cruz Azul on Wednesday.
