6 fun things to do this Memorial Day Weekend in Kansas City

Rejoice! The weekend is here, and even better, it’s a three-day weekend! As always, there’s plenty to do around the Kansas City metro. Here are our top picks for Memorial Day weekend.

Off-the-Wall Film Series kicks off with “Footloose”

Everybody cut loose! The 2014 edition of Off-the-Wall Film Series – 1984: Rave New World kicks off this Friday with a little Kevin Bacon, and the 1984 film “Footloose.” Grab some blankets and lawn chairs, and head over to the Central Library on the Rooftop Terrace for a movie under the stars.  Doors open at 8 p.m., the movie starts at 8:45 p.m.  The film series runs now through September. Camelopardalids Meteor Shower

If you’re out on the town around 2 a.m. Saturday, look up! Dusty debris from Comet 209P/linear will create the Camelopardalids Meteor Shower that could produce a few hundred shooting stars per minute. Scientists say North American sky-gazers will have the best views. The shower should peak from around 2 a.m. until nearly dawn.

Schlitterbahn, Oceans of Fun Water Parks Open

Kick off the unofficial start to summer with a splash! Both Schlitterbahn and Oceans of Fun open for the season this weekend. Schlitterbahn opened Friday at 11 a.m., and Oceans of Fun opens Saturday at 10:30 a.m. *Bonus* All area lakes and pools open this weekend too. Check with your city for exact times and prices.

Westport Roots Festival

If you’re interested in live music, food and drinks, head down to the Westport Roots Festival at the Westport Saloon, this Saturday, from noon to 2 a.m. The event includes 25 performers from Americana, Bluegrass, Roots and Folk genres, and there will be plenty of vendors selling food and drinks. Tuxedo Grill opens at the Kansas City Zoo

Patrons will have another option while visiting the Kansas City Zoo. This Saturday, Tuxedo Grill will open its doors for the first time at 10 a.m. The restaurant, located near Helzberg Penguin Plaza, offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and will include menu items such as fresh salad, wraps, and pizza. Celebration at the Station

One of the most anticipated summer event in Kansas City: Celebration at the Station. It’s the largest free Memorial Day weekend event in the Midwest, and it’s this Sunday at Union Station. The Kansas City Symphony performs patriotic favorites, followed by a fantastic fireworks display.  Everything starts at 8 p.m. Coolers, blankets and lawn chairs are welcome.  For more information, click here.
