Kansas City weekend events: Five fun things to do June 7-9

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Festival season is here in the Kansas City area! Here are five fun things to do this weekend in and around Kansas City.

1. 9th Annual Kansas City International Dragon Boat Festival

"The Dragon Boats are coming!" So says the signs above Brush Creek along the Plaza. The festival begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with a children's dragon parade from Wornall to the Parks and Recreation stage at Nichols Parkway. Admission is free.

2. Kansas City Festival of Fountains

The Sunday festival in the Crown Center area is a celebration of Kansas City's fountains. Activities begin at Union Station at 11 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. Fountain tours, food trucks, children's activities and musical entertainment are just a few of the things happening at this year's festival.

3. Kansas City Royals vs. Houston Astros

The Kansas City Royals have a three-game home stand this weekend against the Houston Astros. Friday's game starts at 7:10 p.m., Saturday at 6:15 p.m. and Sunday's game begins at 1:10 p.m. It's a weekend full of promotions, too. Friday night is Girls Night Out at the K, with a pink KC cap giveaway. It's also fireworks night. Saturday is retro night with a powder blue jersey giveaway and Sunday is K-State day as well as Family FunDay Sunday at the K.

4. Scottish Highland Games

The Kansas City Scottish Highland Games are Friday through Sunday at E.H. Young Riverfront Park in Riverside. Events start Friday at 6 p.m., and at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets range from $5-$10 and parking is free.

5. Old Shawnee Days

Old Shawnee Days started Thursday and runs through Sunday. The event offers a unique insight into the past. The festival opens Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m. with a parade and at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The festival is at Shawnee Town, 11600 Johnson Drive, in Shawnee.
