Beehive sculpture in Kansas City has community buzzing

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - A beehive sculpture in downtown Kansas City has the community buzzing.

The 16-foot working beehive sculpture is located in the 18Broadway gardens at the southeast corner of Broadway and 18th Street.

Kansas City artist and beekeeper Jarrett Mellenbruch wants to do his part to save the honeybees. He unveiled the sculpture, titled "Haven", Friday evening.

Mellenbruch said the durable Corian sculpture marks the first step in a planned nationwide honeybee sanctuary project.

Surrounding the sculpture is a garden of vegetables and fruits that are dependent on honeybee pollination. Mellenbruch said the honey in the hive will stay with the bees.
