VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Think the happiest cows come from California? That might no longer be the case.
Some cattle in Canada are getting red wine to go with their meal.
The idea is the brainchild of Janice Ravndahl, whose family owns Suzmu Meats in British Columbia. She says she got the idea from watching a television show where she saw a chef serving beer to his pigs.
So far, the meat has been a hit with customers. Ravndahl says having the cows drink wine enhances the beef’s flavor and produces fat that tastes like candy.
At first, area chefs were skeptical, thinking of the concept as a gimmick, but so far have been impressed with the flavor.
One chef suggests having the beef with a pinot noir.
