Mountain lion sighted in Platte County

PLATTE COUNTY, Missouri - While some people were spotting great sales on Black Friday, one Missouri man spotted a big cat on his northwestern Missouri property.

The Missouri Department of Conservation visited with the Platte County landowner to confirm the mountain lion sighting.

Mountain lions are nocturnal creatures that typically avoid contact with humans.

The MDC identified claw marks on the tree where the mountain lion was photographed and collected some fur samples for DNA testing.

Jeff Beringer of the MDC’s Mountain Lion Response Team said “more than 90 percent of mountain lion sightings turn out to be bobcats, house cats or dogs.”

The MDC has received more than 1,500 reports of mountain lion sightings since 1994, but only 11 have been confirmed.
