Bass players gather in KC

Fourth Kansas City Bass Workshop is at SM North

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The bass players are back--and for the fourth straight year they are making Kansas City their home for a week.

The Kansas City Bass Workshop began Monday at Shawnee Mission North High School.  It will conclude Friday afternoon.  The workshop was started by bassist and KC native Johnny Hamil four years ago.  It has grown from four attendees to 70 this year.

According to Hamil bass musicians from all parts of the U.S. as well as Mexico and Canada made their way to KC for this year's workshop.  "It's very important that people realize Kansas City is a great and growing arts community," he said.

The faculty for the workshop is headlined by world renowned bassist Francois Rabbath.  Rabbath will perform in concert Thursday night at Park University at 7:00 p.m.  Other faculty members will perform Tuesday at the Green Lady Lounge in KCMO at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday at Shawnee Mission North at 7:00 p.m.

The participants in the workshop range from kids as young as four just learning to play the instrument to professionals in their 60's looking to hone their craft.

Hamil said the public is welcome to drop in at Shawnee Mission North throughout the week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to watch the bass players perform.
