Need for mentors at Big Brothers Big Sisters of KC grows

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The need for mentors at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City has never been greater, and Thursday the organization will have recruiters hitting the streets to get more volunteers involved.

"We have about 500 kids on a waiting list right now," BBBS Chief Marketing Officer Kristi Hutchison said. "That's the highest number we've ever had."

The ultimate goal is to match all 500 kids with new bigs, but the organization has set a short-term goal of 350, which they hope to fulfill by the end of the year, Hutchison said.

The campaign is called Mission 350, and since it started in August, more than 100 littles have been matched with a big. However the waiting list keeps growing.

"Every time we match one kid, another kid comes on to our waiting list," Hutchison said. "So there's always going to be a need for bigs."

The organization is looking for mentors of all ages, but Thursday it is targeting young professionals downtown. They partnered with Coffee Cakes KC and will have people passing out free coffee and spreading the word about the need.
