KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Barbecue lovers in Kansas City may have something to say about this story.
U.S. News & World Report Travel ranked the top American cities for barbecue , and put the City of Fountains third, behind top-rated Memphis, Tenn., and Lockhart, Texas, which came in second.
"Of course Kansas City should be the No. 1 barbecue," said Arzelia Gates, Chief Marketing Officer at Gate's Bar-B-Q, one of Kansas City's notable barbecue joints mentioned in the list.
The magazine gave Memphis high marks for its sauce and its "perfection" of the dry rub and according to the list authors, the meat in Lockhart is so well-cooked, you don't even need sauce.
But Gates says Kansas City is a "melting pot" of barbecue. "You've got the sweet and mild kind of sauce," she said. "You've got the vinegar and the mustard-based, you've got the pulled pork. You've got everything here in Kansas City."
St. Louis also made the list , coming in at No. 7.
