Check dryer vents and chimneys to avoid a fire in your home

More than 15,000 home fires are caused each year by excessive lint in the outside dryer vents. This is the leading cause of home fires and one of the easiest ones to prevent.

It's not expensive to have your dryer vent cleaned annually. There's also a new device that senses pressure in the dryer vent line and will sound an alarm if your dryer vent begins to overfill with lint. A clogged dryer vent is not only a huge fire hazard, but causes your machine to run poorly.

The other leading cause of fires in our home is chimneys. Creosote builds up on the inside of your chimney and is highly flammable.

Be sure that any chimney sweep you hire is certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. A good chimney sweep will have a video system to show you what they cleaned up before and after the job.

Keep your family safe and don't take these tips lightly.
