Tips from Toby: Catching up on lawn care

People have definitely been confused waiting for spring to really arrive. Now we're seeing the grass rising and that's got everyone worried that they're behind on lawn care.

There's still time to catch up.

Most importantly, if you haven't gotten your fertilizer down with Dimension Season Long crabgrass control, do it right away. This will feed your lawn and keep crabgrass under control all season long. I usually tell people to apply this fertilizer in March, but this year, you can put it down until May 15.

You probably already have to mow twice a week and it's hard to keep up with all the rain we've had. That wet, thick grass is going to dull your lawn mower blade quickly. As soon as you can, make sure you get that blade sharpened. A dull blade tears the grass instead of cutting it and this is a very easy way to damage your turf and spread disease.

Also, you want to be mowing at a height of two and a half inches. Don't make the mistake of mowing too low.

Your grass needs to start filling in and the taller you leave it, the better your root system will be.

If you're seeing weeds popping up, all you need to do is mix up some Gordon's Speedzone, Spreader Sticker and water in a pump sprayer and spot spray those weeds.

Remember not to use too much chemical or spray too much. One light pass is all you need to kill those weeds.

Too much and you can damage the grass.

Finally, we've had a ton of rain, but that doesn't mean we won't get a dry spell soon. Our lawns need an inch and a half of water each week. So even if you had three inches a week ago, if it's not raining, you still need to keep it consistent each week all season long.

Spring may have gotten off to a rocky start, but it's just nature doing its thing and you still have plenty of time to get your lawn in shape.
