Kansas City events: A Halloween howl for the whole family

If you're not going door to door trick-or-treating for Halloween, there are a variety of special events planned for both children and adults on the holiday this Wednesday.

-- Several shopping centers are hosting free trick-or-treat events for costumed children Wednesday. They include:
3-5 pm at the marked stores at Town Center Plaza, 5000 W. 119th Street, Leawood, Kan.
4-6 p.m. at Corinth Square, 83rd Street and Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan.
4-6 p.m. at the Prairie Village shops, 6920 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan.
5-7 p.m. at Oak Park Mall, 11149 West 95th St., Overland Park, Kan.
5-9 p.m. at The Great Mall of the Great Plains, 20700 W. 151st St, Olathe, Kan.
-- Small children are invited to a free puppet show being staged at 10 a.m. at Overland Park's Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell Ave. Stone Lion Puppet Theater will stage a "Boneyard Jamboree."

-- The Johnson County Museum, 6305 Lackman Road, Shawnee, Kan., invites costumed kids to enjoy free treats and make craft projects between 10 a.m. and noon Wednesday.

-- The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, 13800 Switzer Overland Park, will offer its "Pumpkin Hollow" festivities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. For a $7 fee, participants can experience horse-drawn hay rides, a corn tunnel, pumpkin "fishing" and a hay pyramid with slide. Plus, everyone gets to take home a pumpkin of his or her choice.

-- And finally, the Overland Park First Assembly of God, 7700 W. 75th St., hosts its Harvest Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. It will feature trunks full of candy, games, prizes, inflatables, music and food.


Children on the Missouri side have a number of free events to choose from, too.

-- The Scarritt Park Neighborhood Association sponsors Scare-It Halloween, starting at 4:30 p.m. in the area just east of the Kansas City Museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd. Four blocks of the boulevard are blocked off to allow kids to go trick-or-treating and to experience playing in inflatables, a fire-dancing performance and miniature train rides. It's free of charge.

-- Costumed children are welcome to attend "Trick or Treat Street" in the Brookside shopping area from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. It's free and sponsored by the by Brookside Business Association.

-- The Zona Rosa Community Foundation is sponsoring a trick-or-treat party from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at The Grove event space, which is on the level below Marshall's Home Goods, 8690 N. Dixson Ave., Kansas City, Mo.

A number of churches are also sponsoring special events Wednesday.

-- The First Baptist Church of Grandview, 1416 Main St., Grandview, Mo., will host "Light Up the Night" from 6 to 8 p.m. Enjoy a maze, trunk or treat, and free hot chocolate!

-- Blue Ridge Bible Church, 8524 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Raytown, Mo., is offering a free hot dog supper and trunk-or-treat event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Decorate your car and bring treats to hand out to the kids of the community. The church will provide a hot dog supper and drinks.

-- Antioch Bible Baptist Church, 800 NE 72nd St., Kansas City, Mo., is sponsoring a trick-or-treat experience in its parking lot from 6 to 7 p.m.

-- First Baptist Church of Raytown's Fall Fun Fest runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 10500 Missouri Highway 350. Costumes are allowed, but organizers ask for no devils, monsters, witches, or ghosts, lest they frighten small children. There is no admittance charge, but a donation of one or more non-perishable items for the food pantry is welcomed. Enjoy fun activities such as carnival games, inflatables, clowns, black-light puppetry and lots of candy.


-- Ra Sushi, 11638 Ash St., Leawood, Kan., will host a "Boo Bash" starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday. There will be $10 Halloween-themed food and $8 drink specials, a DJ and a $100 gift certificate to the winner of the evening's costume contest.

-- Club Quasimodo, 12056 W. 135th St., Overland Park, Kan., will offer a prize for the best costume and Halloween-themed drinks along with music by the Justin Andrew Murray Band, starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday.


-- Burlesque Downtown Underground presents "Spooktacular! Spooktacular!" at 8 p.m. Wednesday at The Red Room at Nica's 320, 320 Southwest Blvd. Admission is $10 at the door.

-- The Ernie Biggs nightclub, 4115 Mill St., will sponsor a "Halloween Humpday Party" starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday. A tent in the parking lot will feature D.J. music and a $1,000 costume contest judged by Sporting KC players. Admission is $10.

-- Gusto Lounge, 504 Westport Road, will feature drink specials and prizes for the best costumes, starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

-- And two bars in the Power & Light District, Shark Bar and McFadden's, host a joint

party featuring a bottomless cup special between 8 and 11 p.m. Wednesday.

-- The Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City hosts a costume party starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Uptown Arts Bar, 3611 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. You need not be an IFC member to attend. There will be food, beverages, prizes and screenings of horror films by local, independent filmmakers. Admission is free if in costume; $5 if not.

-- Finally, history buffs are invited to "Walk with Civil War Spirits" at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield, 301 S. Bynum Road, Lone Jack, Mo. Come listen to the stories of the Civil War through the memories of the spirits who lived them. For more information, call (816) 805-1815.

Haunted houses

And of course, KC's haunted houses will be open on Halloween.

They include:
