Ducklings rescued from manhole in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Seven ducklings were rescued from a sewer in Independence on Friday.

Water Pollution Control officers had to pry the manhole cover off, climb inside and pull them out one-by-one to get them to safety. The ducklings had been in the sewer for about three days, after a car struck and killed their mother.

A woman who works in the area alerted authorities to the stranded baby ducks.

"You can obviously hear them, and it's so stressful, and I know probably a lot of people think it's just ducks, but they're ducks and they shouldn't die in a storm drain," Megan Andrews explained.

Four ducklings had already died by the time water officials arrived, but the seven that were rescued are expected to be okay.
