Angie's List: Preventing mosquitos in your backyard

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Summer is synonymous with many things; baseball, barbeque and unfortunately mosquitos. Angie's List has some tips to help you prevent the pesky pests.

Besides the annoying itch of a mosquito bite, it's important to get rid of mosquitos.

"Not only are mosquitoes a nuisance when you're out trying to have a family barbecue, but they are also a health risk," says Angie's Lists' Angie Hicks. "For example, you could get West Nile. Making sure you have a comfortable outdoor mosquito-free area is important for your family."

It's important to be proactive and get rid of any standing water.

"The thing is we are only looking for a very small amount of water," says Mosquito Control Contractor, Ken Frost. "In fact, it only takes a soda bottle cap full of water to breed several hundred mosquitoes."

You'll want to empty any bird baths and clean your gutters.

Plants like catnip, lavender, marigolds, basil and peppermint can also repel mosquitos.

If you do hire a professional, make sure you talk to them about their plan, especially if you have children and pets.
