KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Over the last couple weeks, the city manager's office has been looking and the pros and cons of two plans to redevelop Kemper Arena.
The city hopes these plans could start a strategy to spark economic development in the West Bottoms.
The two plans at the forefront will be discussed at Thursday’s Planning and Zoning Committee meeting.
The plan by the American Royal calls for Kemper to be torn down and a new, smaller building in its place.
The second plan by the Foutch brothers would keep the arena, but restore it and use it for different events.
This is Councilwoman Jan Marcason's district. She believes the plans are a good start.
"The city, which has the biggest financial stake of anybody, has been a little bit silent on this issue and we've let the other developers kind of set the stage,” Marcason said.
Marcason and city developers plan to do a walking tour of the area next week with one of the lead planners who did work on the Street Car Development.
She hopes it will give him a better idea of the area and its potential.
