Sprint has confirmed that some business units across the country received "workforce reduction" notices Friday.
Sprint Spokesperson Melinda Tiemeyer declined to say which units, where and how many employees could be impacted but did say the moves were made to remain competitive in the industry.
The reductions will take place in the first and second quarter of 2014.
The full statement from Tiemeyer reads:
"Sprint expects that it will have workforce reductions in the first half of 2014 across the country. The extent of the reductions are still being determined. The reductions come as the result of greater efficiencies that we've achieved though simpler pricing plans and improved customer service, changing marketplace dynamics and changes in the product and services sold primarily to business customers. These reductions will include management and non-management positions. All affected employees will be eligible for benefits under the Sprint Separation Plan. The reductions are not expected to affect customers or Sprint services."
