Construction crews break ground for new IKEA store in Merriam, Kan.

MERRIAM, Kan. - Construction crews broke ground on the new Merriam IKEA store at Interstate 35 and Johnson Drive on Tuesday.

In late May, crews tore down the entire vacant Merriam Village shopping center to make way for the new location.

The massive 400,000 square-foot store will take up 19 acres of land.

IKEA officials call this a "destination retailer," meaning people will travel from across the Midwest to come to this location.

"We currently only have 38 IKEA stores in the entire country. Shoppers will come from all over the state and the country. We expect to draw from Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa and a total of six states and, of course, from within Kansas City," said Joseph Roth, public relations for IKEA.

IKEA expects to employ 300 people by the time they open the store in the fall of 2014.
