American Shingle recently sent letters informing customers the company “has been forced to close its doors due to significant financial hardship".
So far, Call For Action has received a dozen complaints about American Shingle from homeowners like Wayne Nesmith.
"It’s no different than someone coming into your home with a gun, pointing a gun at you, telling you to give them your money,” Nesmith says.
American Shingle approached Nesmith to replace his roof last spring. Nesmith's insurance company paid AS over $7,200. That check was cashed in June.
Today, Nesmith is still without a new roof.
"The selling point for me was there was not going to be any out of pocket money. They would handle everything through the insurance company," he said.
Signs on the door of the company’s Lenexa location show a notice of eviction.
It’s being investigated by attorney generals across the country including Kansas and Missouri.
The Missouri attorney general office tells Call For Action, they've received 90 consumer complaints so far.
The Kansas attorney general, as well as district attorneys in Johnson County and Wichita, are part of a joint investigation.
