Consumers may be at risk of not having insurance if they miss payment deadline

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Some consumers who signed up for coverage through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace may be at risk of not being covered come January first.

Consumers have until December 23rd to sign up for Affordable Care Act coverage that would be effective at the beginning of January.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City reports the number of people signing up for coverage continues to increase; however, not a lot of people are paying for their plans.

"Very few individuals have actually made their first payment, which is the last step in the process to ensure that coverage is going to be effective come January first," said Wayne Powell, Vice President, Executive Services and Chief of Staff with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. 

Thursday afternoon, Health and Human Services sent a request to insurance providers, asking them to consider extending the January first payment deadline for consumers. Providers like BCBS of KC tell Call For Action they are meeting to determine what they can do. 

The insurance provider recommends if you receive a bill in the mail, pay it promptly.  Some consumers may think they have signed up and paid for coverage, but have not officially completed the payment process. 

It is recommended that you also contact your insurance provider to make sure you have paid for coverage to begin January first.

How to Submit Payment

Customers may pay for their insurance using a credit or debit card, electronic funds transfer, check, cash or money order. Payments can be made for Blue KC plans:

·         Over the phone by calling Blue KC customer service at 1-800-645-8346

·         In person at either Live Blue wellness center locations (Live Blue cannot accept cash or EFTs)

·         In person at our main office customer service center (2301 Main St., Kansas City, MO)

·         By mail - If mailed call Blue KC to verify your payment was received

Payments submitted in person are considered received at time of submission.

Walk-ins at Blue KC headquarters: M-F, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed on 12/24 and 12/25).
