KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Whether you do it yourself or hire an expert, when it comes to home repair jobs, time and patience can help you avoid a lot of problems.
That is the main advice from Mike Holmes, host of the popular HGTV home improvement show Holmes on Homes.
"Slow down. This is not a race," Holmes recently told us. "If you want to get it done, you need to plan it. You need time."
If you choose to do a home improvement project yourself, Holmes says to pay attention to safety.
"We should be thinking safety first," he said, pointing out that many people do not take the proper safety measures then wind up going to the hospital due to an avoidable accident.
"How many people have you heard go to the hospital working on their own homes doing something foolish," he said. "The little things that we can stop to save ourselves just make sense to me," Holmes said.
When hiring a contractor, Holmes suggests you get bids from more than three professionals, which is often the recommended number. Check out each one by talking to past customers and carefully inspecting the contractors work.
"I can't say this enough. Three references is not enough for me. It's your job to pick up the phone ask a thousand and one questions," Holmes said.
