Simple steps to cut back on heating costs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Bone-chilling January temperatures are giving your furnace a workout, and furnace experts recommend some simple fixes to avoid a costly heating bill.

What is the biggest mistake people make?

"Not changing the filter regularly. It gets dirty and suffocates the furnace," said Dale Arnett with Anthony Heating and Cooling.

Another major mistake, according it Arnett, is not having your furnace properly inspected on a regular basis.

"Get your furnace serviced so you can avoid breakdowns that can be costly and inconvenient," Arnett said.

Kansas City Power & Light offers tips on saving energy and money.

Turning down the thermostat 10 to 15 degrees when you are gone during the day and while you sleep can save you 5 to 15 percent in heating costs a year.

Some other options: keep your shades and drapes open during the day to let the sun in. They also suggest replacing the burned out bulbs with LED lights; and getting rid of the old refrigerators out in the garage or basement, which also drain energy.
