Free tax help available for metro families

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Need some help preparing your taxes? One group is offering assistance to those who qualify.

Free tax preparation through IRS trained volunteers is available for anyone in the metro whose household income was $52,000 or less in 2013.

The program, referred to as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), is offered at locations on both sides of the state line.

Sessions are first-come, first-serve and available on weekday evenings and weekends. You can find all of the locations and hours here.

Those needing assistance should bring their photo ID, social security card, last year’s tax return, W2 and any other tax documents.

Taxpayers can also bring a check to get their refund via direct deposit, which is often quicker than a mailed return.

The program runs through April 12.
