Local retailer banks on last-minute holiday shoppers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Last minute shoppers began to crowd local retailers before the winter weather hit Friday.

The Buckle was banking on those last minute shoppers and planned to get business including two free services,

Besides special last-minute sales, the clothing retailer offers shoppers the chance to hide presents from your loved one through its layaway program which is offered year round.

The manager said shoppers took advantage of this back in October and November but now with Christmas so close, shoppers are planning ahead for themselves.

"We are having really good luck with layaway this year. You just put 20 percent down and then we hold it for you for two months," Manager Kim Froman said. "So that's been great for people shopping and they just don't want to buy for themselves right now so they can kind of put it in a hideaway and come back and get it with Christmas money."

The store is also offering free gift wrapping with any purchase.

At Old Navy, the deals on display are meant to not only attract those who forgot, but those who waited until now for the best deals for their dollars.

Carrie Gilkerson with Old Navy knows shoppers will watch the weather and change their game plane, and so will the store.

"We try and say those are going to be busier days and then not so much on the days that are going to be snowy and bad weather," she said.

Gilkerson also said the employees like the flexible scheduling due to weather because they might get to finish their last minute shopping as well.
