Low gas prices have some negative effects

It has been over a decade since Kansas City has seen gas prices this low.

On Saturday, the average price for a gallon of gas in KC was between $1.20 and $1.40. Filling up the tank is easy, but there is a down side.

Economist Chris Butler says gas and oil prices are low because more countries, including the United States, are making their own. The down side, jobs are now being lost.

"Companies that produce oil here in the United States are losing workers and laying off employees. It's stressing out the finances of these companies and some of them have already gone bankrupt," said Butler.

Most of the companies are smaller operations, but the job loss still affects the stock market.

"When they default on their debt, it spreads like a virus through other companies that are related particularly through the debt market," said Butler.

That means less cash in your 401K.

"As far as the average guy and gal goes, that is the biggest problem with low oil prices," said Butler.

Butler says overall low gas prices are a good thing because people can use money saved on gas and put it back into the economy.
