INDEPENDENCE,Mo. - A 10-year-old boy stole his mother's minivan Sunday morning and led Independence Police on a chase along Missouri Highway 291 before crashing the vehicle – and totaling it – where 291 meets U.S. Highway 40.
Independence Police Sgt. Chris Summers said the boy was angry at having been punished for smoking a cigarette when he decided to take his mother's keys and take off with her vehicle at about 8 a.m.
The woman called police, who began pursuing her van as it turned south onto Highway 291 with the boy behind the wheel. Despite already having one flat tire and with officers behind him using their lights and sirens, the boy continued driving south at about 40 miles per hour until he crashed into a guardrail where Missouri Highway 291 meets U.S. Highway 40.
The boy was unhurt in the crash, and he was transported to the Independence Juvenile Justice Center, where he was charged with stealing a motor vehicle and felony fleeing from police.
