A Grandview man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash where four people were injured.

Kaveon Cottonham is charged with four counts of second-degree assault and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.

Officials said a speeding Pontiac Grand Prix ran a stop sign at 51st and Woodland and crashed into a Hyundai with three adults and a 9-year-old boy inside. The adults were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. The boy suffered critical injuries.

The male driver of the Pontiac and a male passenger both fled the scene; the driver was taken into custody southeast of the scene. The woman who owns the Pontiac stayed at the scene and was taken into custody.

According to court documents, a witness told police when Cottonham saw a police car behind them with lights and sirens on he panicked and thought the police were trying to pull them over. The witness asked Cottonham to pull over, but he sped up to about 75 to 85 mph to get away from the officer.

As Cottonham was approaching the stop at 51st and Woodland, he entered the intersection and hit the Hyundai, according to court documents.

Cottonham and another passenger then got out of the car and ran.

Cottonham denied being involved in the crash, according to court documents.
