LENEXA, Kan. - A Lenexa man has been charged in last week’s deadly Lenexa shooting.
Police arrested 27-year-old Alex Brune late Wednesday night on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of 78-year-old Clifford E. Preston and his 47-year-old step-son Brian Stewart Baskind. (EDITOR'S NOTE: There have been two spellings listed of Brian's last name. Baskind is what is listed on the incident report from the Lenexa Police.)
Brune faces two charges of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary.
The shooting happened near 84th and Hallet Street the evening of July 9. Another man was wounded and called the police shortly after 10 p.m. Police found him outside the home where Preston and Stewart were found dead. He was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.
It was not clear if the person wounded was Brune.
Police records show it took officers four minutes to find the wounded man. He told officers whoever shot him was still inside the house.
Here is the dispatch audio:
Brune faced a judge for the first time on Thursday afternoon via a video link. His torso was wrapped in bandages. Family members of Preston and Baskind were also in the courtroom. Outside, one of them said both men "didn't deserve what they got."
Brune is currently being held on a $2 million bond.
These are the first two homicides of the year in Lenexa. In the last nine years, the city has had only nine homicides.
