Belton Police say 37-year-old Benjamin Friend was heading home from work when he was shot and killed.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday along Prospect Avenue near 58 Highway. Police say they do have witnesses telling them a small red car was involved in the shooting.

The vehicle is believed to be a newer model sports coupe red in color with black rims and tinted windows and a loud exhaust.

Rosehill Landscaping, north of where the shooting happened, has surveillance video pointing towards Prospect Avenue. Belton police were at the landscaping company on Wednesday to look at the video. They also headed back towards the crime scene to do more investigating.

People working at Rosehill Landscaping say Prospect Avenue is a dangerous stretch of road.

“It's a connection between south Kansas City and Kansas City and it is not monitored all that well,” said Forrest Sykes. “We never know when we come to work in the morning what we will find along the roadway.”

Police are asking anyone who saw something near 150 Highway between 291 Highway and Prospect during the time period to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 or Belton Police at 816-331-1500. Police believe both vehicles were traveling west on MO 150 Hwy prior to turning south onto Prospect Ave.

Belton Police say Friend usually travels along 150 Highway on his way home from work.

“I would like someone to come forward that knew something about it because I would like the person found who did the shooting,” said Sykes.
