Court documents reveal some answers in Lenexa double homicide

LENEXA, Kan. - Court documents reveal more information about what happened the night of a double homicide in Lenexa , Kan.

Alex Brune, 27, has been charged with the murders of Clifford Preston, 78, and his 47-year-old stepson Brian Baskind.

Court documents show Brune called 911 on the night of the murders. When officers arrived, they found him in the front lawn, and he had been shot in the stomach. His white Ford van was parked nearby.

Police said the bodies of Preston and Baskind were in the basement. They also found a large knife and handgun near the victims. Police believe they belonged to Preston.

Documents also said police talked to Brune after surgery. He told detectives he had been kidnapped by the two men and put in the basement. Brune also said he stabbed the two, and he was shot as he tried to escape.

Police checked the story using surveillance video from businesses and traffic cameras. They wanted to figure out where the cars were before the murders.

Investigators said Brune’s van was seen near 87th Street at CVS, Sonic, HyVee and then at the victim's house.

Preston's girlfriend was among the last people to see the 78-year old. She told 41 Action News the two dated for three years, and she described as a kind man.

Several paragraphs of the police’s conclusions are redacted. It is unknown what led prosecutors to charge Brune with two murders, aggravated robbery and burglary.
