Coworkers support victims of Craigslist shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The couple gunned down while trying to buy a car from a Craigslist seller may be one step closer to knowing who's responsible for the armed robbery that left them in the hospital.

The 53 year-old Liberty man works for Ferrellgas. It's headquarters is in Overland Park, Kan., and it has 350 employees in the metro.

Scott Brockelmeyer is the Vice President of Corporate Communications.

"He's thorough, meticulous. His co-workers call him Sherlock because he's able to find things many other people can't find," Brockelmeyer said of one of the victims.

Brockelmeyer learned late Wednesday night that the man shot while trying to buy a car from a Craigslist in the 5500 block of 84th Terrace is his friend and colleague.

"Certainly this was an incident that is near and dear to our heart; and so painfully close to home," Brockelmeyer said.

Ferrellgas has partnered with Crimestoppers for years, and it immediately made a $5,000 donation to the reward fund hoping for a quick arrest. According to the police report, the father of three stepped in front of his wife as the gunmen opened fire in front of their 16-year-old son.

Four bullets hit him. One struck his wife.

Brockelmeyer said the details of the crime saddens and angers his colleagues.

"Its tough to be able to focus when you got a friend and co-worker who literally took a bullet for his family and was the victim of such a horrible, horrible, horrible crime," Brockelmeyer said.

This crime may be connected to others. The same day it happened a man was held up less than two miles away when he tried to sell his XBox on Craigslist.

A man has been arrested in that case, and police said the phone number in the ad used to lure the family from Liberty  was also connected to the XBox robbery.
