Chinese food delivery driver in critical condition after attacked with baseball bat

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - A baseball bat attack critically injured a man as he tried to deliver Chinese food. The beating occurred Friday night in the 2200 block of Hall Street in Independence.

Court documents show the driver got out of his car and saw two men approach him. One of those men carried a baseball bat as the pair emerged from behind a house. Authorities said the driver dropped the food order and tried to run, but the men caught the driver. According to authorities, one of the men hit the driver five times with the bat.

Prosecutors charged 17-year-old Luis A. Reyes of Kansas City with assault and armed criminal action for the incident. A second man, James Hollis, 20, of Independence, is also charged with assault and armed criminal action. A 29-year-old woman, Brandy Locke, also faces assault and armed criminal action charges.

She is accused of calling in the order and having it delivered to the vacant house where Hollis and Reyes hid before the attack, according to court documents.

Hollis reportedly told Locke the men did not intend to hurt the driver, but only to steal the food. Reyes later told police he had nothing to do with the incident.

The driver suffered life-threatening injuries to his head.
