Footprints left in snow lead Liberty police to burglary suspect

LIBERTY, Mo. - Liberty police say they've found the man behind several break-ins after a surprising clue helped crack the case.  Zachary Jackson, 19, has been charged with the burglary of three businesses and a home.

"It does kind of hurt," said Doug Perry, standing in front of the newly replaced front door at Liberty Disaster Relief Thrift Shop. It is one of several Liberty businesses burglars targeted in recent weeks.

But it was the footprints left behind in freshly fallen snow at the front door of the shop that police said helped them solve the crime.

"If you've left fresh footprints in the snow, we're gonna follow those up," said Capt. Andy Hedrick.

Court documents state surveillance video captured a thief breaking into the nearby Northstar Garden Center. Police then tracked the footprints outside of the thrift shop to a Liberty home. The woman there later confirmed to police it was her son in that surveillance video.

There are other businesses that were recently burglarized. Hedrick says those are still under investigation.
