Former KBI deputy director charged with sexual exploitation of a child

TOPEKA, Kan. - A former Kansas Bureau of Investigation Deputy Director has been charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a child.

Kyle Smith, 57, was charged in Topeka’s Shawnee County where he also faces two counts of interference with law enforcement.

According to The Topeka Capital-Journal, Smith was released from the agency back in December 2013.

On Thursday night, KBI Director Kirk Thompson released the following statement:

We are saddened and disappointed that a past employee of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is alleged to have committed the acts charged today by the Shawnee County District Attorney. The case is now properly before the courts and, therefore, it would be inappropriate for me or any other member of the agency to comment further at this time.
