Independence police search landfill for clues in triple homicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Independence police are searching an area landfill for evidence in the November triple homicide that left three people dead and a 13-year-old boy injured.

Officers are using construction equipment at the waste management facility at Missouri Highway 291 and Kentucky Road to dig through piles of waste after receiving a tip that something might be there.

The murder happened on Nov. 16. It was initially reported as a home invasion turned deadly. Four people were shot. Killed were Maria Hernandez, her son Antonio Hernandez and her boyfriend Thomas Madrigal. The fourth person was seriously injured.

Antonio Cervantes III, Raul Soto, Bobby Jo Phillips, Carlos Zambrano, Jr. and Kevin M. Finley are charged in the crime. All face the same nine charges.
