KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City man has been charged with abusing his 7-week-old child.
Jamaal L. McDaniel, 25, is charged with abuse of a child and endangering the welfare of a child, both of which are class C felonies.
The charges come after the boy's mother noticed several bruises on his body after he spent time at McDaniel's home in early January. She took the boy, referred to in court documents as "JCM," to the hospital and discovered he had a fracture to his left femur, old and new brain hemorrhaging and fractured ribs.
McDaniel allegedly first told family members he almost dropped "JCM" in the bath tub, so he squeezed him hard to control him from "squirming." The probable cause statement said he later told his mother that he did drop "JCM." He also told his father that "JCM" hit the edge of the tub, according to the probable cause statement.
McDaniel told several family members that he didn't think anything was wrong and didn't think "JCM' needed to go to the hospital. Court documents state he also told relatives this wasn't the first time he almost dropped the baby.
A bond of $150,000 has been requested.
JCM's maternal grandmother, LaQuita Wynn, said it was heartbreaking to see her grandson so badly injured.
"He had blood on his brain, so it had swollen his head," Wynn said. "His spine is crooked a little bit, and he's on a feeding tube.
Wynn said she has mixed emotions about her son-in-law.
"I love him as a son. I love him as a person that I knew," Wynn said. "But the hate comes in from what he'd done to this baby."
Since the injuries were reported in January, the family has been waiting for charges to be filed and hoping the baby makes a full recovery.
"He's a little behind because of the injuries for a 6-month-old," Wynn said. "But he's doing really really well from where he came from."
