A Kansas City, Kansas man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a woman, as well as endangering the lives of three children Thursday, officials said.

Derrick A. Williams, 31, faces first degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Shortly after 5 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Independence Avenue on a reported disturbance.

When officers arrived, they said they found Williams naked, in front of the building. He told officers he shot a woman, court records said.

Officers believe he was under the influence of narcotics.

Officers found a handgun and three children inside the residence crying, court records said. One of the children told the officer, "He killed my mom," officials said. Another child told officers Williams put a gun in a child's mouth and hit another child in the head, according to court records.

Thursday night, police identified the victim as Denise Gayle, 32, of Kansas City, Missouri.

Prosecutors have requested a $300,000 bond.
