Kansas City police say an off-duty police officer was shot at while sitting in his personal car.

The incident happened near a church at 111th and Ruskin Way. Several shots were fired at the officer. He was not hit and did not return fire.

Sgt. Kari Thompson said the officer was sitting in his car while working security for a nearby church. He was not in uniform but did have a bulletproof vest on with the word “POLICE” across the chest.

"As of right now we don't even know if [the gunman] realized that he was [shooting] a police officer,” said KCPD Officer Darin Snapp.

Natalie Winder lives nearby and heard the gunfire.

“First it sounded like pops. There were three, then there was a second delay, then two or three more,” said Winder.

The officer said the person suspected of shooting at him got into a silver car and sped off.

Christian Charity Church Pastor Arthur Mobley Jr. confirmed 50 people, including children, were inside the church for bible study during the shooting.

“I am appalled that somebody made an attempt on an officer’s life. Period. In Kansas City, Missouri and certainly that it happened at a church,” said Mobley Jr.

Police canvassed the neighborhood Wednesday asking for witness information or security footage.

"A lot of people now have surveillance video of their homes. We are just seeing if we can identify the vehicle for one. Maybe a license plate or if anyone saw anything that was in the area,” said Snapp.

Winder describes hearing gunshots at least once every two weeks in the area.

“I was raised by the golden rule. You treat people how you want to be treated. Obviously that’s not how you treat people, ever,” said Winder.
