Kansas City Police officers shot a man early Saturday after he led police on a chase and displayed a handgun.

The incident began just before 3 a.m. when officers went to four separate calls on gunshots near East 37th Street and Wabash Avenue, according to a police statement.

Officers spotted a vehicle leaving the area and followed the vehicle until it stopped at a dead end at East 44th Street and Mersington Avenue.

The officers walked to the car to talk to the man, but saw he had a gun, according to the statement. The officers feared for their lives and opened fire. They began first aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect is in critical condition at a hospital.

A Jackson County prosecutor responded to the scene at 44th and Mersington. The Jackson County prosecutor’s office said it will follow its established process of investigating and reporting on the officer-involved incident.

Anyone with information about the gunfire at East 37th and Wabash Avenue should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
