Kidnapping suspect found dead in jail cell

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - An inmate accused of kidnapping a Harrison County teen was found dead in his jail cell Tuesday night.

Police arrested Elijah McPike, 23, of Gilman City, Mo., Aug. 9 in Kansas City, Kan. McPike was accused of taking 15-year-old Bailey Summers from Harrison County to Wyandotte County. Summers had a protection order against McPike.

Wyandotte County jail officials said McPike was awaiting a return to Harrison County, Mo., where he faced charges of kidnapping, facilitating a felony and inflicting injury/terrorizing. He was found dead in his cell just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities said cell checks were done each hour. Prior to finding him, jail officials said a cell check was done at 7:33 p.m.
