LENEXA, Kansas - A Lenexa jewelry store owner was shot by a robber Thursday afternoon.
Police said the robbery and shooting was reported around 3 p.m. at a jewelry store in the 7700 block of Quivira Road.
The owner, who was shot by the robber, was transported to an area hospital. According to Dan Friesen with the Lenexa Police Department, the employee, a 71-year-old man, is expected to recover. He has serious, but not life threatening injuries.
Police do not know what led up to the shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, it didn't appear that anything was stolen from the store.
The suspect is described as a black male, mid 20s, 5 foot 6, thin build, wearing a knee length white t-shirt and ankle length gray shorts. He was also wearing a dark baseball cap and was armed with an unknown type pistol.
Police would also like to speak with an additional person of interest, described as a black female in her mid 20s, with red or pink highlights in her hair. She was wearing shorts and has a prominent tattoo on her upper thigh, possibly large lettering. She was last seen driving a dark color 1990s model vehicle, possibly a Honda.
Officers are hoping to obtain surveillance video from neighboring businesses.
Lenexa police told NBC Action News that violent crimes have gone up in the Johnson County area because of a spike of population and the economy.
