A man suspected in a series of shootings in 2014 on Kansas City highways has pleaded guilty to 20 felony charges and will serve 30 years in prison, according to a news release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Mohammed Whitaker, 30, pleaded guilty to 10 Class A felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon, discharging a firearm at a motor vehicle and 10 accompanying counts of armed criminal action.

The shootings, attributed to the so-called Highway Shooter, had the KC area on alert. The shooter fired at vehicles on area freeways, injuring at least two drivers.

"I'm glad it's over. I'm glad that I don't have to worry about it continuing or going to trial,” Tom McFarlin said.

McFarlin's car was struck by gunfire. He wasn't hit, but the experience still impacts him.

"When I'm driving down the highway and see an open car window, I even get a little nervous.”

The news release says the Kansas City police kept the suspect under surveillance for days in spring 2014 until he was arrested at his Grandview apartment.
