Missouri has highest number of black murder victims per capita

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - FBI reports show the number of 2009 black murder victims per capita in Missouri is higher than any other state.

The Washington-based company Violence Policy Center published a report Wednesday showing Missouri's 2009 black homicide rate of 34.72 per 100,000 black residents was seven times the national overall homicide rate of 4.76 per 100,000 residents.

Kansas City, Mo. crime stats show 81 of the 110 murder victims in 2009 were black.  Records from the last three years show murder victims are three times more likely to be black.

"We've got our own home grown terrorists," anti-crime advocate Alvin Brooks said.  "That's what they're doing, terrorizing the neighborhood."

Brooks is the founder of the AdHoc Group Against Crime and says he's not surprised to see Missouri at the top of the list.

"We become so chalice sometimes about human life," Brooks said.  "There's no respect for human life."

Paulita Holmes agrees.

"It's sad, and it frustrates me and disgusts me," Holmes said.  "It makes me embarrassed for my city.  It makes me embarrassed for my people."

Holmes' brother Leland Dickens was shot to death the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  He was 33 years old and leaves behind three kids.

"You're taking each other away.  There's not going to be any generations left.  These kids are going to be parentless children because of these senseless murders," Holmes said.

Brooks says he wont be surprised if the numbers for 2010 and 2011 are the same.  He says to see the murder rate go down requires better education, more people snitching, fewer guns on the street and stronger parenting.
