INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - A man was shot and killed early Saturday morning by a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper.
The man, identified as 33-year-old Scott M. Williford of Kansas City, Mo., was walking in the middle of Noland Road near Interstate 70 when he told a Highway Patrol officer he was carrying drugs and a handgun, according to investigators. As the man reached toward his waist band, they said, the trooper fired several shots, killing the man.
No weapon was found on Willford, according to investigators, who are continuing to determine more about what happened. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the shooting, according to a news release.
Earlier, the man threatened to rob a Quik Trip store near Noland Road and I-70, employees there told investigators.
