The Kansas City Police Department opened a new DUI checkpoint Saturday night and several arrests followed.

Officers reported checking 772 vehicles, 15 of which were giving DUIs.

Narcotics were found in five vehicles. One illegal firearm was found. Two people were driving on a suspended or revoked license. Police arrested one fugitive and gave another person an MIP.

Police said typically they give out 200-300 arrests during checkpoints.

Officers said they carefully pick out where to set up. They look at where DUIs, driving deaths and other crime happen and put it into a database.

“We have the capability with E-ticketing now to pull up all the DUI tickets and DUI arrests. We also look at our own fatality and serious injury accidents report,” said Christopher Bentch, Kansas City Police DUI Section Supervisor.

KCPD has opened three new checkpoint locations this year.

Officers said they do not want to be predictable. Police did not want 41 Action News to release the location of the checkpoint.
