Robbery suspects arrested after standoff with KCPD

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City police arrested three people believed to be connected with a string of robberies in Independence after an hours-long standoff with police on Thursday.

Brothers Devonte and Deondre Prendergast and an unidentified woman were all taken into custody by 7:15 p.m., and will be handed over to Independence Police Department, a Kansas City police spokesman told 41 Action News.

A fourth person believed to be connected to the robberies, Eric Garcia, is still at large.

The brothers' stepmother told 41 Action News Deondre and the woman quickly surrendered when police arrived outside their home on Kensington Avenue this afternoon.

Around 6:00 p.m., KCPD tactical teams surrounded the home.

Devonte Prendergast held out longer, at times sending his mother desperate-sounding text messages. She texted back, urging him to surrender, stepmother Kimberly Cox said.

Shortly after 7:15 p.m., Devonte did surrender, and no shots were fired.
